Benefits of Equine Sports Massage

1

Relieve Muscle Tension

Muscle tension can be relieved through the stimulation of muscle fibers, circulation, and sensory receptors. The mechanical pressures involved in massage can elongate the muscle fibers, releasing the fibers from any form of contraction. Sensory receptors can be stimulated to decrease electrical activity thereby reducing muscular tension.

2

Improve Circulation

Blood and lymph flow is increased during massage via arteriolar stimulation when mechanical pressures are applied. The mechanical pressure also allows the circulation of nutrients to the muscles as well as draining any build-ups such as lactic acid.

3

Enhance Performance

Equine Performance can be increased through massage by increasing the range of movement, muscle suppleness, and flexibility. Massage can alleviate muscle adhesions, fibrosis, tension, or scar tissues and thereby restore muscle function.

4

Reduce Injury Risk and Recovery Time

By allowing muscles to be in a supple and healthy state, the risk of injury is significantly reduced. Massage also allows the practitioner to identify any potential injuries early on through feel and monitoring.

Massage is best used as a preventative measure however it can also act to reduce the recovery time through the increase of blood flow and endorphin releases.

5

Relaxation and Reducing Pain

The mechanical pressure and tissue manipulation can stimulate neural activity resulting in relaxation and pain relief.  Neural stimulation can trigger endorphin releases, which reduce pain perception, stress, and anxiety levels.
